  1. The island of Miyajima, located near Hiroshima,
  2. is known for the Itsukushima shrine, one of the
  3. most famous Shinto shrines in all Japan. The
  4. main feature of the shrine is an enormous torii,
  5. or gate, standing offshore in the middle of the
  6. bay. The elegant structure is 16.2 m (53.2 ft.)
  7. high and 23.3 m (76.5 ft.) wide, and was built
  8. in 1168. Note how the Japanese copied the Chinese
  9. style of architecture. The shrine was constructed
  10. on stilts, so that at high tide all the buildings
  11. seem to hover above the water.
