The island of Miyajima, located near Hiroshima,
is known for the Itsukushima shrine, one of the
most famous Shinto shrines in all Japan. The
main feature of the shrine is an enormous torii,
or gate, standing offshore in the middle of the
bay. The elegant structure is 16.2 m (53.2 ft.)
high and 23.3 m (76.5 ft.) wide, and was built
in 1168. Note how the Japanese copied the Chinese
style of architecture. The shrine was constructed
on stilts, so that at high tide all the buildings
seem to hover above the water.
